Empirical Analysis & Methodology

The starting point for the creation of the trend radar was the implementation of a comprehensive analysis in which possible trends, challenges and transformation potentials in the area of wiring harness development were first collected and clustered. This was done by creating a semi-structured interview guide, followed by 20 expert interviews. From these, eight main trends, including automation, digitization and electromobility, were identified and condensed into a trend list. 61 transformation potentials were then assigned to these trends. An online expert survey from various areas of the value chain was conducted to assess the relevance, future influence and need for action of these potentials. The results were analyzed using the Digital Innovation Platform (DIP) of Bayern Innovativ GmbH and presented in the form of an interactive trend radar.

Step 1: Collection & clustering of trends and transformation potentials

The first step involved collecting and clustering potential trends, challenges and transformation potential. Basic trends were identified and a semi-structured interview guide was developed.

Step 2: Conducting & preparing expert interviews

Subsequently, the identified trends and transformation potentials were verified and expanded. This was done by means of 20 expert interviews between February 2023 and April 2023. The focus was on identifying transfer potentials between business, science and cross-industry.

The results of these interviews were condensed and clustered into a trend list with eight main trends.

  1. Automation in wiring harness production & handling
  2. Digitization in the wiring harness
  3. Highly Automated Driving & Electromobility
  4. complexity of the wiring harness architecture
  5. Strategic Management System Development
  6. New Materials & Process Technology
  7. Green electrical system
  8. Regulatory framework

In addition, 61 transformation potentials were assigned to the corresponding trend segments.

Step 3: Online expert survey with the on-board network community

The third step included a comprehensive online expert survey in collaboration with the on-board network community. The transformation potential identified was evaluated based on three criteria: current relevance, future influence and need for action.

  • Current relevance: How relevant is this transformation potential for the wiring harness industry today?
  • Future Influence: How strong will the impact of this transformation potential be on the wiring harness industry?
  • need for action: How urgently does the wiring harness industry need to seize this transformation potential?

The survey was conducted by 93 experts from various stakeholder groups along the value chain, including OEMs, assemblers and component suppliers, within the survey period from September 25.09.2023, 20.10.2023 to October XNUMX, XNUMX.

Step 4: Result processing & radar creation

Finally, the survey results were processed and analyzed using the Digital Innovation Platform (DIP) of Bayern Innovativ GmbH. The results were presented in the form of an interactive trend radar. The survey results were rounded and based on mean values, with the selection options being given equal weight in the evaluation.
