The introduction of electronic fuses (eFuses) in modern vehicles opens up new opportunities for the protection and control of on-board electrical systems. eFuses offer a high degree of flexibility and intelligence by actively monitoring the current flow and shutting down when necessary. However, compared to traditional fuses, there are still many open questions regarding the integration of eFuses, particularly with regard to their impact on the overall system, especially transient disturbances.
In this presentation by Michael Gerten, Technical University of Dortmund , on July 8, 2025, as part of the Trend Outlook series , the effects of transient current peaks on eFuses are examined, and methods for identifying critical scenarios are presented. Using model-based analyses, the presentation demonstrates how eFuses can be optimized to ensure reliable protection in complex vehicle electrical system architectures.
