As part of the Sustainability theme day on March 19, 2026 Robert Koch demonstrated to ITW Automotive the contribution that often underestimated components such as wiring harnesses and their fastening elements can make to sustainability in vehicles.
Sustainability is not achieved solely through alternative drive systems, but through consistent improvements in detail. The presentation illustrates how measurable CO₂ reductions can be achieved across the entire product lifecycle through the targeted use of recycled materials, mono-material designs, and low-PCF materials.
Based on concrete solutions from ITW, lifecycle approaches, recycling-friendly designs, and quick-release concepts are presented, combining circular economy principles, ease of service, and industrial feasibility. In particular, it becomes clear how detailed design decisions can positively influence disassembly, recycling, and maintenance.
This article shows that sustainable innovation in the vehicle electrical system not only offers ecological advantages, but also supports efficiency, weight reduction and future viability of modern vehicles.
