Spray coatings for wiring harnesses

Robotic alternative for bandaging

Re-Thinking Harness Manufacturing: Spray coatings as an efficient way to robot-friendly encapsulation

Today, cable harnesses are predominantly wrapped using manual or robot-assisted taping, which results in high process complexity, limited flexibility, and a limited degree of automation. With increasing product variety and production dynamics, these conventional methods are increasingly reaching their limits. Spray wrapping offers an efficient, robot-compatible approach that significantly simplifies the process while simultaneously ensuring reproducible quality. This presentation situates this disruptive solution within the current manufacturing landscape and highlights the specific advantages and disadvantages of the process.

The lecture was given as part of the Trend outlook for January 27, 2026 Presented by Niklas Piechulek, FAPS - Chair of Manufacturing Automation and Production Systems, Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU).
