Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) – Improving the environmental balance of the on-board network

LCA study and training

Why LCA is crucial for sustainable on-board networks

Climate change, increasing legal requirements and growing pressure for greater transparency in supply chains are challenging companies – but also opening up new opportunities. With a well-founded Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) according to ISO 14040/44 Environmental impacts can be precisely quantified and optimization potential identified.

In order to provide a sound basis for discussion, the Transformation Hub Leitungssatz commissioned an LCA study. It examines the environmental impacts of two exemplary sub-pipelines along different impact categories – and also analyses the sensitivity of the results with regard to data availability and raw material selection.

The study was carried out by the Ludwig-Bölkow-Systemtechnik GmbH (LBST), independently tested by TÜV SÜD. The client is Open Hybrid LabFactory e. V. (OHLF).

Key results:

  • Detailed analysis of environmental impacts along the entire process chain
  • Identification of hotspots in material selection and manufacturing
  • Initial recommendations for action to reduce ecological impacts

The study meets ISO 14040/44 standards and is publicly available.
In addition, it will form the basis for training courses in the wiring harness hub in the future – with the aim of bringing practical sustainability knowledge to the automotive industry.

To the publicly accessible study.

Our free training offers you:

To accompany the study, we offer a free training program, which imparts fundamental and practical knowledge.

Topics of the training:

  • Practical insights based on a current LCA study on automotive wiring harnesses
  • Communication of the most important impact categories: greenhouse gas potential, acidification, primary energy consumption and resource requirements
  • Consideration of the entire value chain – from raw material extraction to recycling (cradle-to-cradle)
  • Working with common LCA software (e.g. openLCA) and databases (e.g. ecoinvent)
