Green Wiring System – Sustainability in Vehicle Construction

Sustainability is a central aspect of the mobility transition, and a vehicle's electrical system plays a key role in this. A green electrical system reduces environmental impacts through the use of recycled and bio-based materials, optimized designs for better recyclability and increased energy efficiency. The "Green Electrical System" working group in the Wiring Harness Transformation Hub develops innovative solutions to promote sustainable approaches in electrical system production.

Sustainability in the on-board network: A key factor in the mobility transition

The wiring harness of a vehicle plays a central role in the ecological transformation of the automotive industry. A green wiring harness reduces environmental impact over the entire life cycle and helps to conserve resources. This includes:

  • Material selection: Use of recycled or bio-based materials to reduce raw material consumption.
  • Design optimization: Development of modular, easily dismantled components to improve recyclability.
  • Material recovery: Efficient recycling processes to close material cycles.
  • CO₂ reduction: Improving energy efficiency in production and use.

The transition to a green electrical system requires close cooperation along the entire value chain – from material suppliers to the various TIER levels and the OEM to recyclers and recycling companies. Initiatives such as the working group "Green Wiring System" as part of the transformation hubs wiring harness promote this exchange. The aim is to work together to develop solutions that make the wiring harness and all associated components more sustainable.

The transformation towards green on-board networks is a crucial step to reduce the environmental impact of the automotive industry while meeting increasing demands for efficiency and sustainability.

In addition, it is useful to know the environmental impact of individual wiring harness components in order to be able to take targeted measures to reduce them. Therefore, a LCA study with two example cable sets and a corresponding training offer to introduce the topic was created.
